On February 10, 2009 The Lonely Island finally debuted their first full comedy album, “Incredibad.” Admittedly I dashed out the morning it came out in stores. I guess I didn’t really need to rush the second my local store opened because there were plenty of copies and no one in the store, ha!
The album has a lot of replay value. I think the one big thing many comedy albums fall flat on eventually is the fact that a lot of it is just spoken word sketches. While the material could be funny, they usually don’t serve a great deal of repeat play time. I mean you can only hear the same stand up act so many times in a year, if even that. What makes this different from any comedy album I’ve heard out there is that they have some really killer sounding songs put to funny lyrics. So you might know the story (or lack of) of each song, but the tunes are very catchy and are easy to listen to over and over again.

You can’t confuse or compare this music with someone like “Weird Al” Yankovic. “Weird Al” is mainly a parody guy, and while a bunch of his takes on popular songs have been funny, the original ones don’t have a certain spunk or catchy sound that The Lonely Island has. I’m the type of person who enjoys a bit of ear candy. They might be singing “Who Said We’re Wack?” with some very basic lyrics, but they sound like they are really whaling on the song and the seriousness of how they project in some of these (not negatively speaking) ridiculous songs, they sound very cool! Who ever thought a song about sailing on a boat with a nautical themed pashmina afghan would be awesome? These guys pull it off with flying colors.
Another great thing about this album is that it doesn’t star one particular person of The Lonely Island. They do a good job featuring all three pretty evenly throughout. The addition of big name guest artists like T-Pain, Norah Jones and Justin Timberlake make Incredibad that much more legit. In fact, too legit. It’s too legit to quit.
If you’ve been a fan of the SNL Digital Shorts songs you’ll love this album. Plus as an added bonus you’ll get a DVD with some of their Digital Shorts included. My only complaint is I wish they would make these SNL Digital Shorts available on Blu-Ray.
My vote for next Digital Short music video based from the album is for “Boom Box” and “Sax Man.”
2 thumbs up, a ka-blamo and an ultimate punch for Incredibad!
