Saturday Night Live has concluded its season and now it’s going to be a long summer before the new season starts up again with Lonely Island Digital Short goodness.

I guess this poses a question I have for the readers. Is there anything you’d like to see more of on this blog? The Hot Rod costume post seems to be one of my most viewed and asked about. I know it isn’t thorough in the start to finish instructions of how and where to get all the materials, but maybe people would like to see a more in depth instructional on making this costume from start to finish? Halloween is months away and I know people have been inquiring about it via e-mail.

I just don’t want to recycle previously reported stuff to you guys in a different form and make sure that whatever you are reading is new and unique from previous posts. I’m more a fan of quality over quantity.

If you didn’t know already, Universal Music seemed to like “Incredibad” so much that they’ve signed The Lonely Island for two more albums. I read that they cranked out a majority of their first album music during the Summer of 2008, so my guess is that they’ll probably be doing the same thing this Summer and then launching their second album early next year. Hopefully somewhere in between that they decide to launch a national tour of some kind. Here I am one of their biggest admirers of their work, have a bunch of signed items, and have yet to have met any of them in-person! It’s my hope to be able to meet them and maybe have my own interview with them in the near future. And I wouldn’t ask them questions most everyone now knows the answers to like “How did you guys meet?” I’ve seen about 10 interviews where that question was asked. Sheesh!

As far as films, I sure hope a signature Lonely Island movie is in the works. I think it would be totally off-the-wall hilarious as their Digital Shorts have consistently been over the last few years. Personally I’d be rooting for skipping making a “Hot Rod 2″ and just go for the gold and create the ultimate “Hot Rod 3-D!” experience (Yeah I know… ain’t gonna happen).

On the subject of “Hot Rod” I think the film is still the best comedy and I don’t care what anyone says. I think it was made a little too early though in terms of the mass audience really being aware of The Lonely Island’s presence in the mainstream and for that the film suffered at the box office. Had it been a film maybe coming out this year I think it would have fared a lot better monetarily, but then again there seems to be a huge awareness of the film out there. I’m surprised the people I’ve talked to have actually more seen it than not. Often if I mention it to someone in conversation I hear, “Oh my god! I love that movie!” For a film that didn’t do too well in theaters an awful lot of people have sure seen it! In the back of my mind I was hoping Andy would have made his entrance at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards as a cameo Rod Kimble on his moped.

All 3 have expressed that they really do enjoy where they are at now in their positions at SNL. I wonder how many years they are contracted to be there? I would think after they’re done with SNL and still want to be in television (as they seem to thoroughly enjoy) that they’d pretty easily get picked up to do their own show. I think the fan base and target audience is definitely there to make it successful.

I hope this wasn’t a boring post for all my readers. I would like to know what your thoughts have been and where you think things are headed next?

The opening was great! Andy goes through different films of last year. I always love it when they do stuff like this inserting them in situations from films. It helps bring the show to a good start. It was entertaining and well put together. Justin makes a cameo to introduce Andy.

To not go too too much into the show and bore with specific details, there were definitely some great highlighted shorts I laughed pretty hard at including the hilarious, “Explosions.” Basically sums up what so many action films do and they hit the nail on the head in covering pretty much all of the films that use the walking away from explosions shot. I also liked the 80′s approach they took on it along with a special appearance of Neil Diamond played by Will Ferrel.

Though I didn’t see the film, “Doubt,” I did laugh pretty hard at the idea of there being a video game made based on a film that looked like there couldn’t possibly be a video game made from. Akiva Schaffer made a special appearance in the “Doubt: Flynn’s Revenge Video Game” film. I also enjoyed how they kept it old skool by making it for the Sega Genesis. Bonus points for that!

The “Starf leet Clown College” short was also very well done! I laughed quite a bit in that.

There was also a first sneak peek at the new Twilight Saga’s “New Moon” trailer of which Andy starred in. You can view it here. I had to watch it a few times cuz I was laughing so hard at how they poked fun at it using a Dracula vampire and Teen Wolf! I’m sure the new gen peeps didn’t quite catch that.

Among other things The Lonely Island Medley was great! Sung by Leann Rymes, Chris Isaacs and Forrest Whittaker, the 3 took the audience on a magical journey of a few of The Lonely Island’s most recognized songs. Of course at the end the official endorsement by Andy, Akiva and Jorma sarcastically crying in happiness of their songs’ performance by high profile celebrities.

Obviously one of the most talked about moments of the show was when Sacha Cohen as one of his many alter egos, “Bruno,” being lowered into Eminem’s seat with his butt right in his face. I definitely think it was planned, but I’m not so sure Eminem was in on it. I highly doubt he’d agree to be a part of such a stunt. I think it was mildly funny, but I don’t think it was necessary and regardless what people may think of Eminem I don’t think it was a very tasteful joke done on national television. Which leads me to the show’s big gripes.

Below isn’t really Lonely Island Related, but I am reviewing my take on the whole show, so with that in mind, read on…

Part of the show felt a bit kiddy in what films were nominated in certain categories. I certainly would be okay with placing “Twilight” as a contender for the show. It definitely appealed to mass audiences and it’s clear people really love the franchise and give kudos to the cast/crew for winning all the categories they were nominated for. However, the show felt very Nickelodeon with, what I thought, was terrible placement of “High School Musical 3″ into the running for any categories. It felt more fitting for a more youthful show like the Kids Choice awards or something. There was WAY TOO much Zac Efron in the show. I don’t feel he deserved the award he got at all, nor did I feel Any of the High School Musical nominations were well deserved. I know one relative that went and saw that film and other than that I don’t know a soul who sat through that.

I was also VERY unhappy that they didn’t even get any scren time to cover the Best Villain category won by Heath Ledger for his performance of The Joker in, “The Dark Knight.” Yes, the film that got completely butt overshadowed by “Twilight” and other films that didn’t even hold a candle to Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece. While I was expecting “Twilight” to win most awards, I have to say that I can’t believe how little love “The Dark Knight” received from MTV. The show definitely seemed to cater more to the younglings than it did the adult audience. Youth are large in numbers and strong in being online savvy to go and vote the heck out of their favorite tween films. I think it was a terrible thing to not acknowledge at least the Best Villain category and was insulting. Shame on MTV for that.

I would hope that next year MTV chooses more carefully their choices for best everything. I will stand by my words when I say I didn’t think anyone from “High School Musical” performances of such significance to be nominated for the categories they were up for. How the heck did that film even get a slot against “The Dark Knight” anyway? Am I the only one who is irritated by this?

Anyway, in closing, Andy Samberg did a great job hosting the show this year and The Lonely Island came through with some very funny shorts and entertainment throughout, but MTV did a terrible job in the choices they made for these categories, and they truly blew off acknowledging one of the best performances of a movie villain in motion picture history. Terrible, MTV. Just terrible.

I decided I’d just go for it and send off my large 11×14 photo, a nice letter and some goofy photos and extras of my Hot Rod Costume I made and props to show my true fandom, hoping to maybe get all 3 sigs on my photo. Being as especially right now how extremely busy these guys are now with juggling SNL and the upcoming MTV Movie Awards (I don’t know how they do it flying back and forth from NY to CA). I don’t know how they still manage to answer their fan mail, unless I’m the only one, HAHA! I highly doubt it.

So fast forward to today my fiancee’ waved a big envelope in the air as I got home and I couldn’t believe I got it back! All 3 dudes signed it. I think maybe they’re starting to remember me a bit from previous fan mail based on Akiva’s personalized message. What do you think?
